Do You Live In An HVHZ?

Do You Live In A HVHZ Rated Zone?
So, if you’re anything like me, you are probably thinking “What in the world is an HVHZ and how do I know if I live in it?” Or, you may have done some research when purchasing your home. HVHZ is an acronym for High Velocity Hurricane Zone. Only about half of Brevard County is defined as HVHZ. Our last post was about hurricane shutters, and the advantages of installing them. This post, I am going to go over the different parts of an impact window, the benefits of installing impact windows in your home and show you the different options we have for you to choose from!
An impact window is a very complex mechanism. There are numerous parts, when put together as a whole, offer maximum protection from hurricanes, as well as intruders. A standard impact window features a multi-chambered frame, 3.0 mm - 6.0 mm thick double strength glass, high performance interlocking tilt sashes, triple weather stripping around the sashes, weather stripping doubles at the meeting rail, and an efficient sloped draining system. All of these features are great, but not what gives you the full maximum protection. The interior of the window, what would be facing inside your home, is as follows. Two panes of glass laminated together with an interlayer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). Moving towards the exterior there is an airspace. This airspace is filled with Argon Gas, a dense inert gas found in our atmosphere. It has a lower thermal conductivity than regular air and when filled inside an insulated glass unit (IGU), energy efficiency and better home insulation come into play! Still moving towards the exterior, next is the low-E coating. Low-E is low-emissivity glass, it is a thin coating on the inside of the exterior pane designed to reflect heat. However, it is a transparent coating and allows visible light to enter the home. All impact windows must have a specific design pressure (DP) and meet or exceed all Florida Building Code and coastal requirements to be installed in a High Velocity Hurricane Zone. Impact windows installed anywhere outside the HVHZ, may have a DP 50 and must meet or exceed Florida Building Code requirements for that area.
All of these components combined, even if the glass is damaged, it will NOT shatter! It stays securely in the frame without any air or water leaks!
“Set it and Forget it” I’m sure you’ve heard this before, it’s a little counter top rotisserie oven, you put your chicken or roast in and you set the temperature, timer, and forget about it. Well, you can think of your impact windows the same way, “Install ‘em and Forget ‘em”. Once, your impact windows are correctly installed by one of our professionals, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy all the benefits that come along. First and foremost, these windows go through multiple tests to be considered impact windows. These tests simulate a Category 5 hurricane, with flying debris, air pressure, and rain. They must meet or exceed all Florida Building Code and coastal requirements. This insures optimum storm protection, as well as protection from burglaries and intruders. In addition to the storm protection and security, impact windows reflect heat and decrease UV rays by 90%, causing less damage and fading to carpets, furniture and drapes. They are energy efficient, after installation you may qualify for the Energy Star rating, and lower insurance premiums, so they are saving you money in various ways. Impact windows drastically reduce outside noise due to the thick insulated glass package. They are custom made to your home, you can choose color, style, single hung (only bottom sash moves up and down), double hung (top and bottom sash move up and down) or casement windows. You can even choose to have grids or not!

We offer a few different brands of impact windows, and you have the option of which one will be the best fit for you! All impact windows insulated glass units (IGUs) are all constructed the same way, there are minor differences in the windows features, for example, the locking mechanisms may be different from one line to the next. Pricing also varies depending on the brand you choose. We carry ViWinTech’s Shoreline Impact Windows, Simonton’s StormBreaker PLUS Impact Windows, Custom Window Systems’ WindPact PLUS Impact Windows and PGT WinGuard Impact Windows. Our specialists will show you all of the different samples, go over the difference in price, and find out which line would best fit you and your budget!
I know that is a lot of information to take in all at once! We want our customers educated about what it is they are purchasing! After all, these windows are not $20! This is a big decision that should be thought about even after you know all the ins and outs of production and how an impact window is designed. It is really important for homeowners to know the different options available to them to protect their homes! Are shutters or impact windows the best option for you? Shutters are great and offer just as much protection as impact windows do, some shutters require manual labor to cover your windows. Some are as easy as 1,2,3. Impact windows, on the other hand, once installed, you just sit back and enjoy the view! You do not have to lift a finger when a storm is coming! You can choose from different brands styles and configurations to fit your home and budget! Give us a call and we will give you a FREE Estimate and go over all your options!
